The Evolution of Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) Certifications from On-Prem to Cloud—An Overdue Demand (D21a)

Looking at comparisons of on-premises and cloud revenue for a Database Management System (DBMS) published by Gartner et al., you will see a dramatic push from on-premises to cloud over the last five years. On the other hand, this isn’t reflected appropriately within the Common Criteria (CC), as customers are not yet supported in using their tested and certified Target of Evaluation (TOE) in its operational hybrid or cloud environment. Though Microsoft as a major RDBMS vendor clearly sees evolvement of CC schemes, there is a need for change to fully support real-life scenarios and the demands of CC end-users. So, where do we head with the next step(s)? Some possible answers are given, but many more unanswered questions are raised, both, from a vendor’s and from a laboratory‘s perspective.
